iOS 10 – New Features and Benefits
iOS 10 is packed with features that are designed to make your iPhone a more personable expression of you. The new features are designed to be fun, show personal character, and or course, make you more productive. The rollout of iOS 10, a major software upgrade, is timed with the release of the new iPhone 7 and is compatible with iPhone 5 and higher (see more compatibility details below).
In iOS 10 the app with the biggest set of new features is iMessages, which focuses on personalization and fun. You get a tighter integration between apps, which is like seamless multitasking; you don’t have to switch between apps as features are automatically accessed from one app to another – like reserving a seat via Open Table app from within the Maps app or paying a friend for lunch using Cash app within Messages.
Many of Apple’s built in apps such as News and Music have been redesigned with more personalization features and Siri can now integrate with third party developer Apps, allowing you to automate more tasks.
There are hundreds of new features in iOS 10. I’ve highlighted key features that I believe most anyone will find beneficial and enjoy.
Messaging is taken to a whole new level in iOS 10 and is filled with ways that share your words and personality. Some features are only available with the more recent versions of the hardware. Here are some of what you can find in iMessage.
iMessage App Store – There are now apps that are supported within iMessage. Add your mobile apps to iMessage to easily make payments to friends using Cash or Venmo apps. Share dinner reservations through Open Table or send active weather reports all without leaving Messages.
Handwriting Notes – Imagine making a text message in your handwriting. You can send a personal handwritten note like “Tks” or “Ok”. If you prefer, you can send pre-written personal notes for a crisper clean look.
Personal Drawing – You can also draw and send your own message. Draw a personal smiley face, heart or almost any shape to send your feelings or expression
Hidden Messages – Create suspense by making your message invisible. The recipient wipes to reveal the image or message. This is called invisible Ink.
Tapback – There are six new quick response icons that can be quickly sent without having to type anything.
Stickers – Put fun stickers on a message bubble to show fun and cute expressions. Stickers are apps available in the new iMessage app store.
Message Bubble Shapes – You can express your emotions, feelings & mood through different shapes & styles of new message bubbles like proud, loud or whisper.
Videos – Add simple overlay images such as heartbeats, sketches, fireballs or even your own drawings in videos before sending or sharing.
There is a new intelligent search to find help you find people, places and more. iOS 10 automatically creates photo Memories by collecting related photos and applying transitions and a music theme creating a movie like slideshow. You can also easily create your own Memories.
Siri can now interact with apps in much more detail. In the past you have been able to ask Siri to open an app or add an appointment to your calendar but now you can ask Siri to perform functionality using Apps beyond Apple’s built in apps. For example ask Siri to use Lyft to get you a ride to the CLT airport or make a dinner reservation.
A new “QuickType” keyboard allows you to type in two languages without switching keyboards.
Suggested events and contact details are added to apps based on information found in Mail.
Merging of App Functionality
Apps that have previously worked as independent services are now more seamlessly integrated. For example: Rather than getting directions in Maps, then going to OpenTable for a reservation, you can now book the dinner reservations through OpenTable directly from Maps or Messages.
Apple’s Redesigned apps
Every iPhone comes with a core set of apps developed by Apple. With each major iOS upgrade the functionality is enhanced. Here is some of what you will find in some of Apple’s built in apps:
Music – New Interface and you can view song lyrics
News – New layout and user flow
Maps – New routing features, make reservations, book a ride
Apple Pay on the web – Shop then pay with Apple Pay for faster, safer transactions.
Home App – New Apple App. A central control system for your automated home systems
Predictive Text now suggests pop up text and emoji’s.
Privacy & Security
Apple prides itself in security and privacy and explicitly discloses that is does not use your personal data. Apple states “iOS 10 uses on-device intelligence to identify the people, objects, and scenes in Photos, and power QuickType suggestions rather than sending that information back to Apple for processing or analysis. When you do share sensitive data with Apple for services like Siri and Maps, it’s always encrypted and never used to build user profiles.”

Best practices for Upgrading to iOS 10
There are lots of great new features in iOS 10. If you decide to upgrade, be sure and back up your data to either iCloud, a computer or to an external device first. It will take over an hour to upgrade and make sure your phone is fully charged or plugged in when upgrading. You will also need to be on a wireless network.
iOS 10 was released Sept 13 and the servers may be extra busy for the next several days and can add to upgrade time. So, you may want to wait a few days before installing the new software. Also, if you are leery of new software, know that there are typically bugs found in the first releases of almost any software. If you want to wait a few week before upgrading you may save yourself from having to do a patch update.
To upgrade to iOS 10:
