It’s here: Galaxy S8 – Can Samsung win back customers with its new flagship phone?

Samsung Galaxy S8 Review

Key Features & Benefits

The Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8+ have just hit the market but how is it doing after last year’s Galaxy Note fire problems? The PA announcements at the airport and inside airplanes that repeatedly told anyone with a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to shut it down and put it in a fireproof bag made me cringe. The new Galaxy S8 is Samsung’s first phone release since last year’s fiasco.  So, what features are Samsung rolling out in its new phone to lure back customers?

Samsung provided me with a new Galaxy S8 to check it out and to share my experience with you. My first impressions: it’s beautiful, feeling smooth and sophisticated.  So far, pre-orders show customers like it, too.

Infinity Display

The new curved glass Infinity Display sets the phone apart in design. The S8 has a significantly different feel from other smartphones given the glass display curves over the edge on all sides, maximizing the viewing area. This creates an ultra smooth surface that looks and feels powerfully sleek.

In addition to the curved screen you will immediately notice that there are no front buttons. The lack of a Home / Fingerprint button on the front puts Samsung ahead of Apple in releasing an all touch-screen smartphone. The Infinity Display design coupled with no home button on the front gives you a larger viewing area so you can see and do more on a single screen. The Home button is actually hidden beneath the glass and is pressure-sensitive. The fingerprint detection has moved to the back, next to the camera.

With this new design the viewing area on the Galaxy S8 is 36% greater than its predecessor S7 and it is beautiful.

Advanced Multi-tasking features – Split Screen

The larger viewing area provides space for advanced multi tasking features like Split Screen. The new Split Screen views allows you to have multiple apps open at the same time on the same screen – no need to switch back and forth. You can pin content to the top of the screen that you want to see while you continue working on the rest of the screen in a different app. You can see portions of two apps at the same time. For example, watch a YouTube video while texting your friends – all on the same screen. I love this!

Facial Recognition, Iris Scanning, Finger Scanner

Protect access to your phone with additional layers of security. In addition to finger scanning, the Galaxy S8 offers facial recognition and iris scanning! To set it up you register your face and/or irises then you can use them to unlock your phone!

There are a host of other custom security features that you can set including options for personalizing what is on the Lock Screen and Always On Display, as well as, having a locked folder.

Along with a 12 MP F1.7 rear camera, you get an 8MP F1.7 front facing camera with autofocus and facial recognition technology. Now you can take high quality selfie pics. Samsung touts that the rear camera generates the “best low-light, zoom and anti-blur photos…”.

You can also add fun effects, filters and stickers to photos and videos with the built in camera features.

You have the option to setup Dual Audio that allows two Bluetooth connections so you can share your music with a friend.

Bixby Vision

Bixby vision is a feature that allows you to search for detailed product information based on an image.  Use your camera to point at an object to find products online, get information about nearby places, identify landmarks and more.  It is similar to a reverse image search on Google.

Gaming Device

The Galaxy S8 is touted as a “Best in Class” gaming and entertainment device. It is the world’s first Mobile HDR Premium certified smartphone, which provides vivid color for movies and tv shows. The colors and depth in the no edge screen gives a unique gaming mobile experience that I haven’t seen.

Expandable Memory/MicroSD Capacity

If you have ever run out of storage space on your phone for pictures, videos and apps the Galaxy S8 has an excellent solution. At the top of the phone there is a hidden slot where you can insert a MicroSD card up, to 256GB, to easily expand the phones storage capacity.

If Galaxy S8 pre-orders are any indication of consumer interest, then Samsung is off to a great start. Pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 surpassed those of the S7. And Samsung is obviously confident enough in its branding that it is planning to launch the next Note smartphone sometime this year.

I personally feel the phone is stunning and unique.  I love the display and feel it makes my iPhone look out of date.  In my short term use I give it 5 stars.  I’ll continue to test it and update my user experience.  Francie
