Greenlight App & Card

The Debit Card for Kids, Managed by Mom

If you would like to give your children some spending freedom but with a little supervision, the Greenlight debit card can help.

Greenlight Debit Card for Kids App IconGreenlight is a (physical) MasterCard® debit card for children, funded by parents using the mobile app. Through the Greenlight app the parent controls how much money is available on the child’s Greenlight card for spending.  A parent  can even specify the exact stores in which the child can use the debit card. For example, if you have a college student and you want to give them $100 allowance per month for groceries, you can fund their Greenlight debit card through the mobile app and specify the grocery stores where the card can be used. If the child tries to buy shoes or clothing at a department store the card will be rejected. The available balance is easily viewed by the parent or child on the app.

In addition to designating available funds for specific stores, you can also allocate “Spend Anywhere” amounts that doesn’t have any restrictions. You can see when and where your child spends the money via the app.  You can sort the transactions by store or by date.

Other conveniences include instantly transferring money to your child when they need it. And, unlike cash, they can’t loose it. If a card is lost or stolen, a new card can be mailed with the available cash balance.

Greenlight & Apple Pay

Greenlight works with Apple Pay. Simply have your child add his or her Greenlight card to his device through his Apple Wallet.

Is Greenlight a Credit Card?

No. Greenlight MasterCard debit card is not a credit card. The only funds available for a child to spend are allocated by the parent via the mobile app.

How to get started

Download and open the app. Fill out basic personal information including your (the parent’s) debit card that will be used to fund your child’s account. The app asks you to designate a starting amount that you will need to verify as a withdrawal from your personal bank account. Add your child to the app and allocate funds to them. A debit card for your child  is sent to you within 5 days and can begin using the allocated funds. Greenlight has done an excellent job of making the setup process quick and easy.

Greenlight cost $4.99/per month for the entire family. You can have multiple children on the account and multiple parents can view and allocate funds. There is a 30 day free trial available.

Is it secure?

Upon installation the app states that Greenlight is “issued by Community Federal Savings Bank, member FDIC, pursuant to license by MasterCard International.” A parent can also set a pin number to each child’s card and turn the card “off” if it is lost.

Greenlight lets you easily give money or allowances to your children while maintaining some control.
