Apple Introduces New iPhones, Watch and Apple TV in time for Shopping Season

1-Steve Jobs CenterApple made their annual fall product announcements on Tuesday, Sept 12 from the brand new Steve Jobs Theatre, which is part of their futuristic “space ship” campus in Cupertino, CA.

New versions of their flagship products; Apple Watch, iPhone, and Apple TV, were announced. There was no mention of upgraded iPads or laptops at the September 12 event.

Here’s a quick run down on what you can expect from Apple as we approach the holiday shopping season.

Apple Watch – Series 3

Tim Cook proudly announced that Apple Watch is now the #1 selling watch in the world. It has surpassed Rolex and Fossil, which have been bumped to 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The new series 3 has cellular service built in! This means that your phone and watch can now operate independently. You can leave your iPhone at home when you go out for a run or swim at the beach. You will have cellular access on your watch using the same phone number and carrier as your iPhone. A few of the benefits include instant access to streaming music, messages, maps, wechat, and Siri even if your iPhone in not nearby.

Apple Watch Series 3
The new dual core processor is 70% faster. It hosts an electronic SIM and the watch is the same size as previous models. Of course, there are new colors and a host of bands. It is also swim proof.

The Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two options:

  • $329 – No Cell
  • $399 – Cellular
  • Order Sept 15. Available Sept 22.

watchOS 4

Along with the new Series 3 Apple Watch a new watchOS is being released. It will be available September 19th to anyone with an Apple Watch, not just the new Series 3.

Some of the key software highlights in watchOS 4 include new features for swimmers, advanced heart rate monitoring, and enhanced activity tracking.

Apple Watch Heart Rate FeaturesTim Cook stated that the Apple Watch heart rate monitor is the most used in the world. It will now take new measurements including resting rate, recovery rate and track how your heart rate trends throughout the day. It will even notice high heart rates, when you don’t expect it. For example, if you are not exercising and your heart rate is elevated, Apple Watch will notify you. It can also detect irregular heart rates. While Apple did not say this directly, it appears as though it could potentially detect early signs of heart attack or stroke.

Apple also announced the “Apple Heart Study” in which they have partnered with Stanford Medicine and the FDA.

AppleTV 4K

Apple TVThe new 4K AppleTV supports superior image quality it is also beefing up their content selection. Amazon Prime videos, live sports and live news, are all being included in the content mix. Sports options will change and be current with what is happening in sports.

New games are being added that are exclusive to AppleTV, iPhone & iPad. “Sky” was the feature game presented at the keynote that took you through a magical flying journey.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

A new iPhone is not a surprise. Apple continues to enhance the traditional iPhone style with the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The camera is 12 MP with new sensors that generate better pictures, lets in more light, better color filters and has improved color matching.

iPhone 8 and 8 plusPortrait Modes, which automatically gives in-studio like settings, has improved. The new Portrait Lighting feature that is still in beta separates the background from the face using AI. You can modify lighting effects before or after taking the picture and can generate stage like lighting.

The new Apple-designed video encoder provides the highest quality video in any smartphone, according to Apple.

Augmented Reality Support

The new camera is also “calibrated” for Augmented Reality using new gyroscopes and an A11 bionic chip. Point your camera at a baseball game and get pop up information about the players on the field. AR automatically mixes real life situations layered with enhanced real-time information. I can imagine this if you are in the historic streets of Boston pointing your iPhone at a historic landmark where the history or videos of significant events automatically displays.

For gamers, AR makes you feel like you are more “in the game” rather than just “controlling it”. For example, in a battle game if you physically move forward and get closer to an exploding object on the screen, the explosion sound increases. You can view games from any angle that changes as you move around. I can see that this could cause some serious bruises.

Apple previewed the new AR “Machines Game” that will be available exclusively on iOS in the fall. Watch for this to be released.

iPhone X

The iPhone X is Apple’s new flagship phone that is a big departure from 10 years of Apple phone design. The new design is an edge-to-edge, corner to corner screen (much like the Galaxy S8). It has a glass front and back with a stainless steel band.

The stand out feature here is the removal of the home button and therefore eliminating Touch ID as we know it. Rather than using your finger to unlock your phone, the new front facing camera uses facial recognition or “Face ID”. Face ID uses Apple’s “TrueDepth” camera system that maps the unique geometry of your face. It recognizes you if you are wearing a hat, glasses or change your hairstyle. Using the built in infrared camera it will even recognize you in the dark.

iPhone XThe Face ID information is not sent over networks to keep your identity information private. It also works with Apple Pay.

Because you don’t have a home button, you swipe up from any app to get to the home screen. Swipe up and pause to go to multi-tasking.   The Control Panel access has moved to the top.

Other Key iPhone X Features

  • Water and dust resistant
  • Super Retina Display – 2436 x 1125 pixel res, OLED Screen Technology, 458 Pixel Density
  • Dual Rear Facing 12MP Cameras (wide-angle & telephoto)
  • New A11 Bionic Chip “. . . Capable of up to 600 billion operations per second.”
  • Front Facing 7MP TrueDepth camera
  • Portrait mode is available on front and back cameras

The TrueDepth front facing camera provides some fun and cool features. You can add animoji’s that track your face with your movements replicated on the emoji. You can become a talking fox or pig. Smile, turn your head, wink, talk and your animoji moves with you! Record yourself (as the animoji) and send it to your friends. This AI feature takes emoji’s to the next level.
