Halloween Safety Apps
Halloween is a blast for kids but parents left at home can get worried about their goblins. These 3 free apps allow you to track your children so you know they are safe. Kids can still have their freedom and mom & dad get their piece of mind.
1) Life360 App
This family tracker app is great for Halloween. It works on iOS and Android devices and allows you to see where your trick-or-treaters are on a map. Your kids can also see where their trick-or-treat buddies are in case someone gets separated from the group.

A Circle for Teen Halloween Groups
Help your teen create a private Circle in Life360 to connect them with their group of friends. It’s always best to stay together, but if someone gets separated they can easily see everyone’s location on the Life360 map to find them. To create a new Circle:
- On your teen’s phone, have them click on the Circle name at the top and scroll to the bottom of the drop-down menu
- Click ‘Create a New Circle’
- Click ‘Create a Custom Circle’ (ios)
- Name the Circle something fun, and save!
- Click ‘Invite New Members’ at the bottom and have them share the code with their friends
- Their friends follow step 1 and click ‘Enter an Invite Code’
- They can follow each other and message each other privately throughout the night!
Map A Trick-or-Treat Zone
Map a trick-or-treat route with the family. Create a Place Alert for this area so you will get a notification if your children step outside of it into unknown territory. To set up your trick-or-treat Place:
- From the menu, hit ‘Places’
- In the Places screen, hit ‘Add’ in the top right corner
- Name your Place ‘Trick-or-Treat Zone’
- Enter an address or move the map below to the desired zone
- Slide the bar at the bottom to make the area smaller or larger, depending on your family’s route
- Save the place!
- On the next screen, make sure you turn on notifications for this Place

2) Track & Treat App by Glympse
Track & Treat app is designed specifically for Halloween. It is very simple to use and effective.
This free app is available for Android users (Glympse GPS Tracker app is the equivalent for iOS users but does not have the Halloween theme). Track & Treat shows your child’s location (turns on location sharing) on a map that can be easily shared with multiple caregivers.
Activating the app is easy. On your child’s smartphone install and open Track and Treat. Add one or more email addresses or phone numbers of the people who can track your child’s location – mom, dad, grandparents, guardian, etc. The parent (or guardian) will receive either a text message (if you entered their mobile number) or an email message (if you entered their email address) with a link to a page that displays the child’s current location. Tap the link at anytime to get a location update. The recipient can be an iOS or Android user.
The parent does not have to install the app. If the parent does not have the app installed, the link will launch the phone’s web browser and open a mobile friendly page with the child’s location on the map. It is easy and seamless. And, although Track & Treat is no longer available on iOS you can install the Glympse GPS tracker app to do the same things (without the Halloween motif) if you prefer an app experience instead of the browser experience.
3) Share My Location – iOS Feature
This is an excellent feature to use on Halloween or anytime. Share My Location, is a built in iOS feature that is part of the Messages app. It allows you to see your child’s (or friend’s) location at anytime. A map displays showing his/her current location. You can share your location with iOS and Android users.
How to Share Location
To see your child’s location: On the child’s iPhone go to the Messages App. Find a message (or create one) that your child has sent to you. Tap Details in the upper right hand corner. Then Tap “Share My Location”. The parent will receive a text message stating that his child’s location has been shared. The parent can then choose to share the parent’s location with the child, if desired.
You can check on your child’s updated location status at anytime. To do this, go to the parent’s cell phone, open the Messages App and select a message from your child. Tap Details. You will see your child’s active location on a map.
A Few Tips
If the child turns off his cell phone or it runs out of battery, the feature will not work. Also, if the phone is dropped or gets lost, you will see the location of the phone on the map but not the child. So, fully charge the phone before he/she leaves for trick or treating and put the smartphone in a safe pocket.
Find My Friends App (also known as Find Friends), the built in app on iOS, allows you to do the same location sharing as Messages. However, Find My Friends gives you a list of all of your friends with whom you are sharing your location and friends that are sharing their location with you. You can tap on their name to see their location the map. This is very handy if you have a group of friends sharing their location during trick-or-treating.
Cellular Data Usage
Life360, Track and Treat, and other GPS trackers use location services to route your path. This requires use of your cellular data and also consumes battery power. If you have an unlimited data plan this is not an issue, however if you have a limited data plan it could be a concern. If you have a limited data plan, be sure and turn off the service (or delete the app) when you are finished trick or treating!
